booklet design

Booklet editorial design

I have been putting the finishing touches to my booklet that i am going to use to showcase the project. The editorial design i have chosen is clean. I have chosen a bold, crisp typeface, Lot, for the title page and have used illustrator to break up the lettering to show 'fragments'. This typeface is contrasted by my handwriting which i have scanned in for a personal touch. A serif typeface was chosen for the titles as it gives the editorial a classic feel.

The colour scheme is a cool gray colour with varying tints, as this is a calm background colour for the bright colours of the posters. There is a splash of Cyan for some type to add colour. The booklet is divided into four sections on either side - and the posters bleed off the edge in various positions to give the layout balance. The posters are held in various ways that relate to the subject of the poster.

I will be printing about 50 of these booklets that can be distributed at the exhibition.

new design client

I am excited to be working on a new branding project for Apex Recruitment. Watch this space for upcoming work...time frames are short but energy is running high..

booklet printing

I have been investigating printing my booklet to showcase my final posters on newspaper. I was hoping to find a printing press that would be able to print it on 42.5g paper. However, after many phone calls and some research it seems that this is not possible as specialise printers are needed and the amount that i want to print wouldn't make it cost effective to print.

Also, to print double sided on A2 is unmanageable and not readily available therefore I am going to get my final booklet printed on A3 80g paper which is the lightest available, double sided. I propose to get 50 printed which will then be folded into a booklet and distributed at the exhibition.

time heals all wounds

I created a new poster today using salt to spell 'time heals all wounds'..i placed it on a black surface so the contrast in the image was high..

as it is said that salt heals wounds..i wanted to put a different slant on it..the way the type is arranged and the perspective shows time moving away and passing...

fresh meet

This is the name that we have decided on for the name of our end of year exhibition..it suggests that we are new, fresh talent..like fresh meat..but plays on the word 'meat' showing that the exhibition is a chance for people to come and meet us for the first time.

I need to start brainstorming concepts for the design of a poster for the exhibition....to be continued....

booklet

I have been considering how to present my booklet of images and was inspired by a fold out map i saw. Instead of producing a regular book of images i think it would be more interesting to fold A1 paper into a booklet that folds out. This would mean that people at the exhibition could actually take a copy of the work with them. Also, i could experiment with juxtaposing different images. Possibly the back of the poster could be an A1 poster?

I need to re-visit my schedule and make sure i allocate enough time to get the project finished. The screen printing is going well and i am starting to understand the process better.

Screen printing

Today i experimented with screen printing and learn't the basics which has given me a good idea of what can be possible for my final pieces.

I have got the concepts now for each of my posters i need to just investigate how to best display the work in the form of a book..as i may do a leaflet that folds out.

For the end of year exhibition it would be a good idea to produce postcards with my work and details on to hand out to people visiting the exhibition...we need to come up with a name for the end of year exhibition...?

Alan Fletcher Exhibiton

I travelled to Manchester to see the Alan Fletcher exhibition celebrating 50 years of work (+ play)..i was particularly interested in his work in relation this project due to his use of handmade typographic work.

Reid Miles

I have looking at some of the work of Reid Miles who was the graphic designer for the Blue Note Jazz record label creating the art work for the album covers. I really like his use of typography and the treatment of the type that he uses. He cuts into the type and has interesting layouts.

I want to research more about letterpress and how to get a less digital feel to my work..

Agostina

I have been researching different typefaces and really like this typeface Agostina - it is delicate but solid and could be really effective when used with a handmade element..

Sister Corita

I have been looking at the work of sister corita - a nun working as a graphic designer from the 1950's through to the 1970's..she used graphic design to communicate the word of God and particular political messages - she took her inspiration from street signage and expressionist artists as her work developed it became less pictorial and more typographic with the use of very strong colours that were influenced from commercial places such as supermarket advertising and often used the colours of well known brands in her work.

I like the hand drawn feel to her work - it is screen printed. For her exhibitions she built an installation out of painted cardboard boxes to display her work which is a really nice touch. Some of these images show her work and what i have been looking at.

Change of direction

Today I have taken a change of direction with my project. I am no longer going to produce a range of T shirts..following my research i want to make it a personal exploration piece and create a book of images and a supporting range of A1 posters..updated brief is below:

Concept

Computers run on a clocking system called the Unix Time System. The clock started ticking on the 1st January 1970 and every moment in time since can be measured by a 10-digit numerical number which represents the number of seconds that have passed since the epoch of the era.

The Declaration of Independence for the United States explores the pursuit of happiness. I have been considering how happiness can be measured and was inspired by a quote by *** “Happiness can be measured not by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.” These moments, good or bad, shape a person’s life.

Project

This project will be a personal account of my life so far. The clock starting ticking at 00:00 on 30th June 1981. All of the life changing moments in my life so far can be represented by Unix time, a numerical 10-digit number as described above.

This number will be graphically illustrated and accompanied by the title of a song which reflects that particular moment. This combination of typography and information graphics will form a book of images. To the viewer, each image will be graphically interesting and seem obvious but the deeper meaning behind the work will be a personal exploration.

I want to focus on typography, graphic design elements and strong colours rather than a photographic approach. My inspiration will start from graphic designers such as Saul Bass and Sister Corita.

Deliverables

For this project I will deliver:

  • a book of images
  • book jacket design
  • a related series of A1 posters
  • an introductory multimedia video introducing the project which can be put on my website to showcase the work

Saul Bass

I have been looking at the work of Saul Bass as in my opinion i think he is a fantastic graphic designer - what i like about his work is the vibrant colour combinations that he uses and each piece of work as a real handmade feel to it. He was known as the king of film posters and titles - he worked with many famous film directors and did opening sequences for films such as Hitchcock's Vertigo, North by Northwest and Psycho aswell as Goodfellas and Scorsese's Casino in 1995. His work influences the movies of today and can be seen in films such as 'CAtch me if you can' and 'Fight Club'.

He is self taught in design and suggests that design is a modern term but when he started he was refered to as a commercial artist as he received money for his work in comparison to painters who did not. He was introduced to the Bauhaus style and Russian Constructivism which can be seen in his work, although it is softer.

In relation to this project i like the use of colour and stencil effects in his work.

To view some of his film titles - they can be seen at the following links on youtube:

Epoch

Epoch - a moment in time chosen as the origin of a particular era.

I have been researching the theory of time and how it is represented and measured. There is a system called the unix time system which is used for computing systems. The clock started counting at the Unix Epoch which was the 1st Jan 1970. Since then every day is 86 400 secs. Each date since the Epoch can be represented as a decimal number.

Ive been considering how every persons life is its own era - happiness is not a destination but a journey and everybody's journey is mapped differently. The map is defined by life changing events, which are all moments in time. What if each of these moments could be expressed and celebrated graphically?

Your own epoch started the second when you were born and your clock starts counting..

Focusing the brief

this t shirt was designed by Michael C Place at Build studio. It is part of a time collection, the numbers show the length of the track. .. with the title below it..also interesting packaging

this t shirt design reads 'all designers are w**kers!" - maybe designer humour maybe not!?

I have doing further research to focus the theme of my project. I want the design of the t shirts to be focused on typography but am researching focusing the design on a design based audience.

Design Brief

PROJECT TWENTY TWO

The following brief outlines the work that will be undertaken for my final term project. The project will involve setting up a new clothing label.

BRANDING

TwentyTwo is the chosen name for a new fashion label which will become a brand for urban T shirt designs. Since the 1950’s with the exposure of famous actors such as Marlon Brando, the T shirt changed from being an undergarment to a popular fashion item for men, women and children. Through the years, it has become a walking canvas for people to express their views and feelings and a canvas for artists and designers to be creative.

DESIGN

The brand will be aimed at a fashion conscious and forward thinking market with an interest and awareness of both fashion and design. The theme for the range of T shirts will be focussed on typographic design using sayings, lyrics and buzz words that the target market can relate to.

In depth research into the graphic design of T shirts must be done in order to create a brand that is original and fresh.

A strong identity must be designed for the brand and relevant research into competitor brands, brand development and corporate identity must be carried out. The name TwentyTwo allows a fresh identity with no preconceived ideas of the name. The identity must take into consideration the characteristics, aesthetics and uniqueness of the T shirts being created.

PRODUCTION

For the production of prototypes for the T shirts, different printing techniques must be investigated and researched as well as suitable suppliers for printing the graphics onto. Different shapes and colours of T shirts must be explored. It should be a consideration whether to use Fairtrade materials for the designs and what the ethical ethos of the brand will be.

Introducing..

twentytwo
I have set up this online blog to track, record and document the development of a new project I am embarking on. Introducing... twentytwo, a new fashion label brand. For the past few days I have been deliberating over what to call this new label. I thought of Dirty Laundry, Beautiful Chaos, Urban Decay amongst others but none of them fit the bill...

The brand will be the new home of a range of T Shirts which will be designed by myself for a university project but the life of the project will extend into the 'real world'. I decided on twentytwo because it is my lucky number and my daughter's birthday. I think that the name will allow me to be creative with an identity and as it is numerical it allows me to define the feel and look of the brand and the t shirts.

The next week will be spent researching further other graphic designers and tee shirt graphics..to get a clear direction for the focus of the label..in the meantime here are some images that are inspiring me...
